Things to Do

If you plan to stay in Switzerland a bit longer, here are some recommendations to make the most out of your trip

Visit Lugano

Lugano is the main town center in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. We recommend visting the historic Via Nassa (very typical Swiss Italian street with shops) and Piazza Riforma (main town square). Make sure to take a stroll on the Lungolago (walkable lakeshore path, don’t forget to stop by the memorial and bust dedicated to George Washington). If you want to enjoy an amazing view of the lake reach the top of Monte Brè. If instead you feel the need to be closer to the water you can rent a pedal boat (see picture above)!

Restaurant recommendations: Bottegone del Vino (fun and relaxed environment), Argentino (excellent pizza), Grotto della Salute (Giacomo’s favorite just outside Lugano, book a spot outdoor under the trees)

Visit Como (Italy)

Como is just five minutes past the border with Switzerland and excellent for a day trip. We recommend of course visiting the historic city center. To make sure to visit the entire historic citiy center, start your stroll from Piazza Cavour and finish at Porta Torre (or viceversa). During your walk you can stop at the following notable landmarks: Como’s Cathedral, Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, and Piazza San Fedele.

Restaurant Recommendations: Da Pietro (right in front of the Cathedral), La Darsena (meal with a view of the lake), Harry’s Bar (in Cernobbio, just outside Como)

Take the cogwheel railway (or hike) to the top of the Generoso Mountain

To enjoy one of the best views of the region you should reach the summit of Monte Generoso. We recommend taking the cogwheel railway from the Capolago train station to the top of the mountain (Monte Generoso Vetta) and enjoy a meal at the Fiore di Pietra restaurant. Alternatively, for the most adventurous, it is of course possible to hike all the way to the top!
